On August 19,1942 the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division were ordered to make a front attack on the town of Dieppe, France. The Allies wanted to try out new equipment and strategies, and possibly learn the German's skills. The key was to surprise the Germans. Unfortunately, there were way to many problems for the Canadians from the start until the end. The element of surprise was eliminated when the Canadian ships came across a German convoy at night, this led to the whole operation failure. Once the small convoy was encountered the Germans were notified and were ready for battle. The Royal Regiment of Canada arrived late of the eastern side of the beach resulting in the death of 500 Canadian men. On the western side South Saskatchewan Regiment and the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders did not face any real opposition until they got nearer to Dieppe. The Royal Hamilton light infantry were greeted with machine guns when landing on the main Dieppe beach. As a result, 900 Canadian soldiers were killed and 2000 were taken prisoner. In conclusion, despite the tough Canadian loss, their mistakes later helped on in D-Day.
