During the battle of Dunkirk, Allied forces were trapped in Dunkirk, and while Hitler was caught in a deadlock debating whether he should conclude the attack with the German air force, or the German army the Allies used this delay time to rescue the forces using 222 naval vessels and 800 fishing/pleasure/commercial boats. Using this navy, the soldiers were rescued and sent through the English channel.
